Coeliac disease is a lifelong condition in which individuals are unable to tolerate gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.
The condition is listed in the Fifth Schedule of the Social Security Act (Chapter 318) and qualifies for government medical aid. Through the National Coeliac Scheme, eligible patients may apply with POYC to receive a monthly allowance to help cover the additional cost of gluten‑free food products.
Applications must be submitted in line with the Government Formulary and applicable protocols through a Consultant Gastroenterologist, Consultant Paediatrician, or Consultant Surgeon. Once eligibility is approved, patients will be contacted by the POYC Finance section to provide their bank details and begin receiving the allowance.
Patients aged 60 years and over, as well as those in receipt of social benefits, are entitled to a monthly allowance of €90. All other eligible patients receive €85 per month.
