The Pharmacy of Your Choice (POYC) Scheme coordinates and schedules the distribution of medicinal products listed on the Government Formulary List (GFL), as well as Exceptional Medical Items to 233 community pharmacies across Malta and Gozo, serving approximately 185,000 patients. This service enables eligible patients to collect their entitlement from the community pharmacy of their choice, ensuring greater accessibility and convenience. In addition, POYC also distributes acute medicinal products to three Government Pharmacies at Floriana, Paola and Gozo General Hospital, for onward dispenses to pink card holders (via Second Schedule of the Social Security Act CAP.318).

The Medicines Approval Section is responsible for processing applications and renewing entitlements to patients, via the Fifth Schedule of the Social Security Act (CAP.318), ensuring that these are properly regulated and renewed in a timely manner. The total number of active Schedule V entitlements is approximately 237,000.

POYC processes Drug Control Card applications on behalf of the Superintendent of Public Health which allow patients access to controlled substances. The total number of active Drug Control Cards is approximately 59,000.

The Home Delivery of Complete Nutrition Preparation provides direct home delivery to patients registered under the POYC Scheme. The total number of patients eligible to benefit from this measure is approximately 3,700.

The Coeliac Bank Transfer System provides a quarterly allowance through a direct bank transfer to patients’ bank accounts, enabling them to purchase gluten-free food products. Introduced in early 2026, this system replaces the previous vouchering system, reducing bureaucratic procedure and providing a simpler, more efficient process for eligible patients. At time of reporting, the approximate number of patients benefiting from this scheme is 2,200.
